CABA Completes Intelligent Buildings Roadmap
The Continental Automated Buildings Association is pleased to announce the completion of its Intelligent Buildings Roadmap.
The Roadmap is a collaborative industry-funded research project designed to update CABA’s Technology Roadmap (TRM) for Intelligent Buildings, a research report released in 2002.
The Roadmap’s primary objective is to identify strategies for developing intelligent buildings that have the greatest potential to drive broad acceptance. The report examines the challenges facing intelligent building implementation within North America and identifies the market developments and industry initiatives needed to support the wider adoption of these technologies.
The report, authored by Building Intelligence Group LLC, employs qualitative market research including focus groups, interviews, and trend analysis to conclude that a series of barriers inhibit industry growth. The report recommends a complete strategy to remove these barriers, and surveys the sentiments of industry stakeholders.
“Despite perceivable barriers, we found on the whole that builders, owners and operators are excited about the concept of the intelligent building and are looking to implement intelligent building technologies in new projects,” states Paul Ehrlich, PE, President and Founder of Building Intelligence Group LLC. “The trend towards sustainable buildings and the need to be more operationally efficient are predominate factors that we feel will ultimately propel intelligent buildings forward, reduce barriers to its technological implementation, and increase adoption.”
As an organization, CABA will examine the report’s recommendations through its Intelligent & Integrated Buildings Council and Board of Directors.
“CABA is committed to reviewing and employing elements of the Roadmap’s strategy to address structural barriers that are hindering the industry’s full potential,” states Ronald J. Zimmer, CABA President & CEO. “The Roadmap is a success in that it evaluates past industry objectives and recommends new, innovative paths forward.”
Organizations that funded the Intelligent Buildings Roadmap include Cisco Systems, Direct Energy, ESC Automation/Delta Controls, Johnson Controls, HID Corporation, Honeywell International, Tridium, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories, Legrand North America, Lutron Electronics Co., Inc., Panduit Corp., Siemens Building Technologies, TAC, Trane, and
InfoComm International.
Pete Horton, Vice President of Marketing Development at Watt Stopper/Legrand, and Chair of the project's steering committee states: “The Roadmap is quite valuable to its sponsor companies because it lays out a complete vision on how the industry should proceed and evolve.”
The report has been released to its sponsors and an executive summary has been made available to CABA members. The Roadmap will be made available for sale in the near future, and will be featured at CABA’s upcoming Intelligent Buildings Leadership Forum. The Forum will be held June 18 in conjunction with Information International in Anaheim, CA.
The development of report was managed by Cookson Development, a product and business development management consulting firm.
